The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has instructed its members to “temporarily suspend” the implementation of the proposed increase in transport fares, initially set at 20%, which was slated to commence on January 24, 2024.
Drivers cited rising spare parts and essential logistics costs, coupled with increasing taxes, as reasons for the intended fare adjustment. Transport Deputy Minister Hassan Tampuli urged all stakeholders to engage in discussions to find a mutually agreeable solution.
Mr Tampuli remarked on January 18, 2024, “So, this is just the tip of the iceberg, so sometimes it gets very heated in our meetings, but at the end of the day, we can come to a compromise. I believe on this occasion it would not be any different from what has happened in the past.”
However, the GPRTU has suspended the fare increase directive in anticipation of a consultation scheduled for January 23.
In a statement by GPRTU General Secretary, Mr Godfred Abulbire, it was announced that the union’s management and transport operators would engage in a stakeholder consultation with the Ministry of Transport on January 23, 2024, to “comprehensively” address the matter.
